Jerry Zacchia founded the company on April 23, 1973. Jerry graduated from UCONN with an accounting degree and started in public accounting after graduation.

From public accounting, he held several controller positions at various companies in Connecticut & Rhode Island. Deciding to go into business for himself, Jerry began selling Nutone home products (vac systems, alarm systems, food processing centers & garage door openers). The increasing demand for garage door openers in the 1970’s led him to concentrate in this area. Realizing that you can not specialize in openers without getting into garage doors he self educated about the garage door industry and started Automatic Door Company in Shelton, CT.

The company prospered throughout the 70’s and 80’s especially with the building boom of the mid 80’s. Jerry’s two sons began working during schools vacations to learn the business from the time they were 12 years old. The oldest son Bob joined the company full-time after graduating from Sacred Heart University in 1990. In this same year, the company was incorporated under the name ZAC Enterprises, Inc., but retained the same trade name of Automatic Door Company.

Bob’s skill as an installer has raised the level of craftsmanship of the company’s door & opener installations head & shoulders above anyone else in Fairfield County. The youngest son Gary joined the company fulltime in 1995 after graduating from Fairfield University and a two-year stint as a staff accountant. Gary’s marketing skills have helped the company double its revenues and, in 2002, he opened a second office, in Fairfield, to specialize in the higher end market of lower Fairfield County.

The company is embarking the most aggressive expansion in its history by leasing a 2,000 square foot showroom/office in Fairfield at 75 North Pine Creek Rd (behind Harry’s Liquor store). Gary opened the Garage Door Center in Fairfield in 2004. Then in 2006, he launched Architectural Door Corp., a manufacturing facility that fabricates all of the wood garage doors and matching entry doors. This facility also provides factory staining and painting of the whole product line. Also in 2006, Robert purchased a brand new office/warehouse in Trumbull to relocate the Shelton office.

The company’s focus has always been to give the customer the best quality doors, openers available. Equally important as the quality products the company carries is the quality of the installation the company provides. Other companies carry some of the same products, but cannot match the neat, clean, rock solid installations refined over 31 years of experience. We strive to give the customer the most value for their money.
